CloudBased or OnPremise?

Often a metaphor for the Internet (note the "cloud" drawn around Internet), “cloud computing” is more of a concept or paradigm than a technology. Cloud vendors talk about “abstracting complexity” at various levels for the end-user. IT services provisioned more like your electric utility — you plug into the grid (the Internet) to access various products and services (programs, data, services, servers, hardware, support, etc.) on a subscription basis vs. the local desktop/PC/LAN hardware and software license model -- often referred to as, client/server model.

Ask yourself: What's the cost of my "digital environment"?

Terms used interchangeably or in combination include:

- Software as a Service (SaaS)

- Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
- Platform as a Service (PaaS)
- Application Service Provider (ASP)
- Web-based system
- Cloud-based system
- Subscription model

"Before implementing electronic health records, physician group practice administrators invariably hit a significant fork in the road. One path they can choose is the longstanding "do-it-yourself" approach of licensing and installing the application locally. The other path involves relying on a vendor to remotely host the software and provide related services."

ASP/cloud computing or PC/LAN model?

With AXEO PM+EMR, you can choose either approach. Consider both sides of the argument.  The pros and cons, then you decide.

"Being completely honest, I personally don’t have much to hide and so Free ASP Company could have a hey day looking through my health information. However, I’m not sure most patients will share my same view. My guess is that most patients would feel very uncomfortable going to a doctor that is using a service like this. I think they’ll feel like their doctor was selling their information to save a buck. It might be one thing if the patient saved some money too, but that’s not going to happen."

John, MD

"It wasn't easy. But I soon learned it was an enormous boon to me to be able to access my patients' records outside of the office."

David Blumenthal, MD
